Copernicus is a local-build Linux Desktop adaptation plus an installable GPT-only

Copernicus is an unofficial, local-build Linux wrapper for
[OpenAI ChatGPT Desktop](https://chatgpt.com/download/) and an installable
Codex plugin for ambitious local work. It combines the proven Linux conversion
pipeline with thirteen deliberately small workflows:
- **Grill Me** resolves a plan through one recommended question at a time.
- **Odyseusz** finds one ethical asymmetric move and its cheapest reversible test.
- **Planning** turns substantial or resumable changes into validated, test-first
linked workpacks while leaving focused work in native Plan Mode.
- **Fleet** routes bounded work across native GPT Sol, Terra, and Luna lanes.
- **Breathe** runs bounded deep Luna map-reduce waves and compresses them into a
decision-complete human brief with expandable evidence.
- **Auto-Research** invents a problem-specific agent DAG, evaluates candidates,
writes hash-chained local receipts, and learns through OKF only at cycle boundaries.
- **OKF Docs** traverses, validates, queries, indexes, and safely migrates large
Google OKF v0.2 Markdown knowledge bundles.
- **Rick Rubin** reduces brainstorms and systems to the few ideas that earn their weight.
- **HTML Report** turns evaluated work into a portable human-facing brief,
explanation, decision aid, review, or lesson.
- **Retrospective** reconstructs work from evidence and proposes verified improvements.
- **Ponytail** finds the smallest correct implementation after tracing the real flow.
- **Caveman** removes prose weight without weakening technical or safety detail.
- **Handoff** transfers redacted session state while linking durable artifacts.
The bundled Copernicus skills use native GPT models and need no third-party
model router, database, or always-on agent society. The Linux wrapper separately
offers opt-in transport and provider-compatibility features. Commands and
trusted evaluators outrank model votes.
The project builds native `.deb`, `.rpm`, and `.pkg.tar.zst` packages, supports
local AppImage self-builds and Nix, and can install a local update manager that
rebuilds future Linux packages from newer upstream DMGs.

## Install the Copernicus plugin
With a current Codex CLI and an existing ChatGPT sign-in:

Then ask Codex to use `$grill-me`, `$odyseusz`, `$rick-rubin`, `$planning`, `$fleet`, `$breathe`,
`$auto-research`, `$okf-docs`, `$html-report`, `$retrospective`, `$ponytail`,
`$caveman`, or `$handoff`. Model access and reasoning controls remain account- and
workspace-dependent; Copernicus does not unlock models or increase plan limits.
One plugin installation provides all thirteen bundled skills. Open
`/plugins`, choose **Copernicus**, and start a new task after installation. See

## Optional self-hosted remote companion
[Coding WebUI](https://github.com/Babinci/coding-webui) is the separately deployed companion for
controlling Codex sessions through a responsive VPS web interface or an installable Android client.
Both clients use one owner login and the same HTTPS API; Android adds native voice input and file
picking. The [v0.1.0 test release](https://github.com/Babinci/coding-webui/releases/tag/v0.1.0)
includes a directly installable debug-signed APK.
The companion is not embedded in Copernicus and does not inherit Desktop credentials. It runs beside
the authenticated Codex CLI on the chosen host and has its own TLS, password, workspace, and update
boundary. This is independent from the experimental upstream `remote-mobile-control` feature below.
### Custom chat colors
The `ui-tweaks` feature adds persistent red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and
purple row tints to pinned chats and local chats inside Projects. Enable it in
the ignored `linux-features/features.json` before building:

## How To Install
ChatGPT Desktop for Linux is built locally from the upstream `Codex.dmg`: the
installer downloads or reuses the DMG, extracts the Electron app, applies Linux
compatibility patches, rebuilds native modules, stages the Linux runtime, and
packages the result. Optional Linux-only integrations live in `linux-features/`
and stay disabled unless you enable them before building.
OpenAI currently publishes the upstream file as `ChatGPT.dmg`; Copernicus caches
that same download locally as `Codex.dmg` for compatibility with its build tools.
For native packages and AppImage self-builds, start from a checkout:

Recommended native install:

`make bootstrap-native` installs build dependencies, validates the cached
upstream `Codex.dmg`, downloads it only when missing or stale, builds
`codex-app/`, packages it for your distro, and installs the newest artifact
from `dist/`.
For a user-owned installation whose routine rebuilds and replacements do not
need administrator authentication:

On a fresh profile this command builds the app before reporting success. It
installs under `~/.local/opt/codex-desktop-linux`; the optional timer checks for
updates weekly. Installing system build dependencies may still require a
one-time administrator action. A native package under `/opt/codex-desktop` is a
separate channel and continues to require polkit or `sudo` when it is replaced.
If you are installing dependencies manually on Fedora:

## Uninstall
Close ChatGPT Desktop first, then remove the native package with your distro's
package manager:

Native package removal stops and disables `codex-update-manager.service` when
the service is installed. If the service was left behind by an older package or
a manual install, disable it explicitly:

AppImage builds are not installed system-wide by this repository; delete the
AppImage file you created. A repo-only generated app can be removed from the
checkout with:

`NIXPKGS_ALLOW_UNFREE=1 nix run --impure github:Babinci/copernicus` is ephemeral. If you installed
the flake through a Nix profile, Home Manager, or a NixOS module, remove that
profile or configuration entry and rebuild your profile/system.
User data is preserved for reinstall. To remove only this wrapper's local app
state, logs, launcher flags, and updater state, delete these paths.
If you enabled Remote Mobile Control, `~/.config/codex-desktop` can contain
the private `remote-control-device-keys/` directory. Revoke paired devices in
Codex Settings/Connections or ChatGPT before deleting it or removing the whole
`codex-desktop` directory. For feature-owned data, prefer the cleanup flow in
[Native setup](docs/native-setup.md#feature-cleanup).

Do not remove `~/.codex` unless you also want to delete your Codex CLI
configuration and project state.
## Before You Install
The generated app and native packages bundle a managed Linux Node.js runtime.
You do not need a distro `nodejs` / `npm` package for normal installs, Browser
Use, Codex CLI install/update, or local auto-update rebuilds.
The Codex CLI is still required at runtime. The first launch can install or
update `@openai/codex` with the bundled `npm`, or you can manage the CLI
yourself. If you install the CLI manually through npm, include optional
dependencies with `npm i -g --include=optional @openai/codex` so the Linux
platform binary is present. The launcher does not rank installed CLIs by
version; it uses an explicit `CODEX_CLI_PATH` first, then the normal lookup
order, and logs the resolved CLI path plus best-effort version so GUI PATH
issues are visible. Set `CODEX_CLI_PATH=/path/to/codex` when you want to pin a
specific binary.
Local AppImage builds can optionally embed that CLI and its matching Linux
platform package. Set `CODEX_CLI_BUNDLE_SOURCE` to an installed
`node_modules/@openai/codex` directory when running `make appimage`; explicit
`CODEX_CLI_PATH` values still take precedence at runtime. See

X11 and Wayland sessions are supported. The launcher prefers XWayland on
Wayland when available for better Electron popup positioning, then falls back
to Electron's automatic Wayland handling. See
[Troubleshooting](docs/troubleshooting.md) for GPU, Vulkan, and `/tmp noexec`
workarounds.

ChatGPT-account model rollouts remain controlled by OpenAI per account.
Rebuilding this wrapper does not unlock them. API-key-authenticated custom
providers can opt in to their own visible CLI model catalog with
`api-key-model-visibility`.
## Optional Linux Features
Optional Linux-only integrations live in `linux-features/` and are disabled by
default. They can add ASAR patches, staged resources, runtime hooks, package
hooks, or legacy build/install hooks without changing the core build flow.

## Updates
Default native packages install `codex-update-manager`, a `systemd --user`
service that checks for newer upstream DMGs, rebuilds a local native package,
and installs it after ChatGPT Desktop exits. The final install uses `pkexec`.
Minimal window-manager sessions need a graphical polkit authentication agent
for the in-app install button; otherwise the updater keeps the package ready
and reports a terminal `sudo /usr/bin/codex-update-manager ... --path ...`
command.
Manual-update package:

Local builds are transactional: the candidate must pass the same
[upstream DMG acceptance profile](docs/upstream-dmg-acceptance.md) used by the
scheduled GitHub workflow before it replaces the working `codex-app/`.
Only configured Linux Features are checked; drift in an enabled feature keeps
the current app installed until that feature is disabled or repaired.
Build and install a package:

The package scripts only repackage the already-generated `codex-app/`. They do
not download or extract the DMG themselves. See

## Troubleshooting

ChatGPT Desktop, OpenAI services, trademarks, upstream application code, binaries,
and assets remain the property of OpenAI or their respective owners.
The MIT license in this repository applies only to this wrapper's source code,
packaging scripts, documentation, and Linux compatibility glue. Generated apps
and native packages are composite outputs containing upstream proprietary
software; they are not MIT-licensed as a whole.
This repository and its releases do not redistribute the upstream DMG or a
converted OpenAI application package. Users must obtain their own authorized
copy of ChatGPT Desktop through OpenAI's official channels. The build process
performs a local Linux compatibility conversion on the user's own copy so it
can run on Linux.
In practice, it automates the conversion process that users perform on their
own copies.
Use of ChatGPT Desktop remains subject to OpenAI's applicable terms and
server-side feature availability.
The unmodified upstream application icon is excluded from MIT and remains an
OpenAI asset. See the [licensing and distribution map](docs/licensing.md) and
