  1. It is just a weapon
    Oct 29, 2026 · original
Another useless AI rant, me screaming into the void, feel free to ignore. When we see someone brandishing a knife, we tend to go "They have a weapon." Then they use it to cut a rope or open a letter. Or just cut some bread. Then we go "It's a tool." When we see someone holding a firearm, we immediately go "They have a weapon!" But then it turns out that it was a flaregun, which they fired in a forest to help the helicopter pilot to find the person in trouble. Then we go "It's a tool." Now pedantics would say "Weapon is a tool, it's just meant for causing harm." But I digress. We have a lot of these type of items. Hammers for example we perceive as tool first, weapon second. Now to make my point: When I look at "AI" stuff, I very commonly see a weapon. It's used to hurt women and minorities Artificial Intelligence Is Not Gender-Neutral Women in the age of AI-enabled disinformation It's ma
  2. Akademy 2026 Desktop Icon BoF
    Oct 23, 2026 · original
I am very late to write this but anyways. But please do the survey . KDE Plasma desktop icons (the actual system that holds the icons, not the .desktop files) is a bit crusty, due to many years of people fixing bugs there. This now causes new bugs in return. So, at Akademy this year I had my own very first BoF around this topic. It was bit of a mess as I have never done a BoF before, but we had a good brainstorm session and I got good feedback. One of the good feedback was that hey, let's ask our users! Thus I made a survey, where I ask questions such as: You have icons on another screen but it gets disconnected Your screen resolution changes Link to the survey: https://survey.kde.org/355778 We want to know what is your opinion on this, so we can get this done better for future. And when there is enough data, I will make some graphs. :D We also discussed the history of the desktop icons.
  3. Tinkering in Geminispace
    Oct 10, 2026 · original
I'm back in geminispace Hey there, just small update that I've been doing a separate tiny blog in geminispace . You can find it in here if you also use gemini protocol: gemini://akselmo.dev/ I also have a tinylog there that is basically gemini version of fedi. We'll see how long that stays around, I just wanted a place to experiment in, as this blog feels very rigid to do so in. On the other hand, I may just say "who cares" and experiment more in here too, as it's my blog! :P But I do like keeping things more stable in here. I also enjoy the gemini posting way more, as posting there is literally modifying text files and pushing to git. I have similar setup for my blog, but it's a bit more convoluted as there's static site building etc in the middle. Anyway I ramble about the above more in gemini space, if you're interested. :)
  4. Akademy 2026 photos and things
    Sep 28, 2026 · original
Another Akademy attended, here's some photos! Hello hello! It was that time of the year where I go to KDE Akademy , talk to fellow nerds, almost lose my voice due to socializing and eat a lot of nice food. This time Akademy was in Graz, Austria. I had never been in Austria before. This time I also had to travel alone due to my wife being busy with studying. Traveling alone was nervewracking for sure, but somehow I managed to do it. Unless I am dreaming and wake up under a bench in Frankfurt airport or something. Now I do not have a lot of photos, but I tried. I am bad at photos, many of them are super shakey or bad. But maybe these are interesting anyway. Let me know if you want me to blur your face, I tried my best avoid those who had red lanyards!!! Traveling to Graz I spent first 6h in a midnight train from home to Helsinki and could not sleep. Then I went from Helsinki to Frankfurt o
  5. Aks plays EVE, part 13: Back at it again
    Sep 13, 2026 · original
Space pewpew continues! Been a while. Since I got my Akademy trip coming and it's making me super nervous, I wanted to play a "comfort food" game, which for me happens to be EVE Online. Not much to report, except that I lost two Kestrels to some mistakes. I think some of the matchups were impossible either way, but hey, it was good way to get my feet wet again. However, I decided to do One More Run before stopping for the night, so I took the trustworthy Caldari Navy Hookbill out in the space. The keen eyed may notice that there is two killmarks on this thing! I managed to win alone against two destroyers: https://zkillboard.com/kill/138426666/ https://zkillboard.com/kill/138426693/ Honestly I was surprised how well it went. I trusted my instincts to do just manual piloting and keep them away from me in about 8km distance. I could hit them, but they couldn't hit me. Good fight! And good
  6. Initial Release of Union QtWidgets
    Aug 28, 2026 · original
It has begun. After couple months of work, I have now finally managed to cobble together the QtWidgets side of Union . This means that your QtWidgets apps, such as Dolphin, KMail, Kate etc. can now use the Union CSS files as the source of their styling. However, temper your expectations, as this is the first initial release! Do note that there are visual bugs and oddities! I'm still working on things! So yes, as you can see, some things look off. Not Breeze at all! Some things are just different, some other things have wrong colors. These are all fixable and I will do my best to get as many things as possible fixed for the Plasma 6.8 release. But some other oddities are kind of expected: This is the first time ever Breeze QtWidgets and QtQuick style have same shared source-of-truth as an easily editable file! (Excluding colorschemes.) So some of these designs are made with QtQuick in min
  7. Deleted my fedi account
    Aug 23, 2026 · original
Aaaand it's gone. Edit: Well the jig is up, you may have seen my new one, like I mentioned in this post below I would make that. This new account will be very strictly friends only, though some of my KDE stuff I tag publicly. That's all. Original text below. I deleted my fedi account because I got tired of how aggressive it all was, and I had so many followers I felt like every move I did, everything I said, was scrutinized by some people. Few of these said people tried to influence my way of thinking, trying to make me agree with them about everything. And if I didn't, that would cause me to be outcasted as the evil one. It was very hard to be myself under the constant scrutiny of 1400 followers. "Ignore the haters" yeah sure but that's not how shit works. I left twitter long ago (before the rich cunt bought the site), because it had turned already back then into godawful site where "du
  8. KDE Linux experiences
    Aug 21, 2026 · original
I daily drove KDE Linux for almost a year and I liked it, but I'm also switching back to Fedora KDE . Here's my ramblings about it all. KDE Linux is the hot new Linux distro from KDE themselves. At the moment it uses Arch Linux as it's base but with heavy modifications and changes. You can read more about it on the site, but to sum up: It's an atomic/"immutable" distro that does not have any kind of package management outside of installing flatpaks. (Do note that they're experimenting on using buildstream instead of Arch Linux.) As one of the KDE devs I've been daily driving it on my desktop, which I use for both work and leisure (gaming). The following text can be quite technical as I am viewing this through my developer workflow lense, though I will also touch on regular user things. Upsides For general purpose computing and KDE dev, things are looking great! Honestly, it works rather
  9. Matsucon 2026 cosplay photos
    Aug 12, 2026 · original
I had fun cosplaying at Matsucon and I went on stage too! At Matsucon this year I spent bunch of money on the artist alley, but I also had signed up for a "cosplay catwalk" which was very spooky but interesting. Photos But first some photos! Video of the catwalk thing I have no idea how Zola will work with video embedding but here you go. I wanted to do more than just silly little waves but.. I kinda blacked out. I had some plans what I wanted to do but we had very short time on the stage. We were told we have like 10 seconds on stage, so I kinda panicked and thought I had spent all my time already. So the lizard brain took over, quite literally! Oh well, maybe next time I have better idea what I'm going to do and how. I have only been on stage with this suit only once, and it was in much much smaller event. Anyways, it was fun! Will go there next year too.
  10. Ramblings about complacency
    Jul 26, 2026 · original
I'm fueled by my spite to write this incoherent rambling of a madman. This is highly related to my previous post , but I can't stop thinking about this so I'll make a new post. My blog anyways. Over the many past years I have just been rather tired of tech. It overrides our wants and needs to serve the corporate overlords. Sounds like bad cyberpunk writing, but sadly it's true. And it's likely going to get worse. Unless you just.. Refuse to play. This does not mean "i will sell my computer, buy a farm, realise im now overwhelmed by farm work because I was naive enough to believe the romantification of farms in my head" but it means "Fine. I'll make my own thing or help others to work on better thing." Obviously there are situations where you can just not do this. But it's about minimizing the bullshit in your life. I even wrote about that here: https://akselmo.dev/posts/minimizing-impact
  11. re: Don't take the black pill (video)
    Jul 24, 2026 · original
Reply to Don't Take the Black Pill - Andrew Kelley | SSW 2026 Such a nice, hopeful talk in this video. I've noticed I've gotten more and more and more jaded over time. The hypetech booms really do not help, and you know exactly which one I'm talking about at this point in time. But it touched much more things I've noticed wrong in our industry. And it has gotten me jaded, going "why do we care anyway" at times. I've said "computers/tech/internet was a mistake" many many times. Half joking. He basically called me out for being too jaded.. And that was such nice thing to hear. Since I had been thinking about it myself for long time too. My first reaction to many many things is just a jaded tired response.. So someone I sort of look up to essentially telling me to stop that is something I sorely needed. The key point of the video was very hopeful to me: We have power to make better stuff. S
  12. Leaving lobste.rs rant
    Jul 9, 2026 · original
For context, I have gotten a lot of emails either asking why I deactivated my account or just sending me well wishes after the deactivation. This post is more for them than anyone else. If you don't care about random techbro website drama, feel free to skip. Edit: I do sincerely appreciate all the well wishes and nice messages. Thank you, truly. I had no idea anyone would care about me leaving. I had been tired of the site for a while. When I joined lobste.rs it was pretty much hacker news but good: people were reasonable and found joy in crafting stuff with computer, instead of trying to make profit at all means possible which is just tiresome to read about. Well, time seems to have catched up on lobste.rs too since the joy of crafting is gone. Many are instead dickswinging about some new thing they generated which will be unmaintained in couple weeks, or just trying to do what hacker n
  13. Please keep code descriptions simple
    Jun 23, 2026 · original
Just something I experience more and more these days. When it comes to reviewing code, the descriptions, commits and such can be massive blast of information: Full of extraneous details depicting what was changed. The main point is why was something changed. And often in only one huge commit with massive diffs. I'm sorry but my poor ADHD brain can't take this very well. I don't want to read a novel. Usually blurbs of text are fine: Extraneous detail I can ask about if I need to know. So this is my plea, from accessibility-ish(?) standpoint, to keep commit messages, merge request descriptions and code comments clear, to the point, need-to-know basis. Do not explain what, but why. Usually the code itself is enough to tell rest of the story. If not, I will ask questions. That's why it's a review. It's easy to think that having huge description with all and everything is the way to go, but i
  14. I like the Uruky search engine
    Jun 13, 2026 · original
Silly name but works wonders. I have been using this search engine called Uruky for about a week: https://uruky.com/ As a software dev, big part of my workflow is searching for information. As search engines in general keep getting worse and worse, it has became more difficult. However with Uruky I have managed to find the exact results I need. No silly "AI" summaries. No other weird shit. Just list of links. That's all I want and that's exactly whar Uruky provides. It seems like a search engine that actually trusts me to be able to read and understand the results. It doesn't nag me with "hey you idiot, heres a hallucinated summary." It respects me as it doesn't try to throw me some magic bullshit but just allows me to open links and read with my own damn brains. I know I am getting older, but modern websites seem to have this expectation that the users are stupid and can't think for the

I prefer ice tea or chocolate milk. Just joining the blogspam shitposting dont mind me. Context: https://www.gordonmclean.co.uk/2026/06/11/yes-buy-me-a-coffee https://michaelharley.net/posts/2026/06/11/re-no-i-wont-buy-you-a-coffee/ https://hakkerman.eu/blog/i-wont-buy-you-a-coffee/
  16. Minimizing impact of negative things in my life
    May 30, 2026 · original
I am tired of many things. Some of them have bothered me for years. Some are rather recent. Here's how I have dealt with all that. Minimizing. I try to minimize anything related to negative things in my life, until I can either nullify the whole thing from my life, or it is so insignificant, it doesn't bother me anymore. For example, when moving my email from gmail to my own domain, what I did was make gmail redirect the mails to the new one. Then every time I got an email, I moved only that email. Eventually all things I need are in my real email, and gmail is now very insignificant for me. When it comes to things that are harmful to me in larger scale, such as bad corporations ruining things as they like to do, all I can really do is minimize my dependency and interactions with that thing. There are very bad things out there, so if I can, I just won't use their stuff. Good for my walle
  17. Stop advertising in your commits!
    May 26, 2026 · original
Co-authored-by: ur mom If your tool adds advertisements in your work by default, it's a bad tool and does not need to be used. I don't get why people just gleefully add these ads for companies to their open-source projects that do not pay them a penny (but actively take money from them in subscription fees). "Assisted by blabot", "co-authored-by: slopgpt", "sent from my fartphone" Why? It's a fucking ad. I bet you use ad blockers, yet you add ads to your commits. Stop that. Disclose your "AI" tools in a merge request if needed but leave them out of the damn commits, those are for technical information and not for advertising. Or just add "generated by an LLM" but do not give those companies free advertising space. Or just.. Do not use these tools, which is fairly easy. Any tool that adds advertising to commits or emails or whatever messages is a really bad one . Fuck ads. Also before som
  18. Splitting Konsole views from Helix to run tools
    May 25, 2026 · original
I have been tinkering with Helix editor lately since I quite like it. It's a fun little editor. Can recommend for those who like modal editing. I do not know if it'll ever replace Kate editor for me, but I'm challenging myself to try new tools, just for the fun of it. With Helix, I've used this git tool called gitu that is rather quick and easy to work with. Though I still use lazygit for more complex tasks. Main pain point for me has been how to use some of these tools like gitu within Helix. Lazygit could be done with some magic , but I was never really satisfied with it. I also tried Zellij for terminal multiplexing and running commands between two splits and so on. It was a bit cumbersome to get it to work as I wanted, since Zellij has tons of features I'll never need. This also caused my fingers to get entangled since I had to remember all sorts of shortcuts. Just not for me. In Kon
  19. Aks Plays EVE, part 12: I am the 3%
    May 21, 2026 · original
Really short and spooky one this time. I was roaming about lowsec in my lil Hookbill as usual, and found a Firetail in a complex. So I warped in. They neutralized my capacitor completely (in short: i ran out of energy) so I was having real scary time keeping my repairing and modules running. I tried to disrupt their turret range and keep distance, but eventually my ship was just so completely out of capacitor that I just floated around in very slow speed. Luckily my rockets still kept firing, so I could go down fighting. Except.. I survived. I was on the edge of my seat, though I had already kind of accepted defeat. But then I noticed I was alive and their ship exploded instead. https://zkillboard.com/kill/135654072/ What a fight. What a glorious, absolutely fun fight. I'm still riding the adrenaline high. I kept roaming a bit more after but it's getting late, so more next time. But this
  20. Arctic Lights ComicCon 2026 cosplay photos
    May 19, 2026 · original
I visited Arctic Lights ComicCon and it was fun! Here's some photos and thoughts on the whole thing. I had fun at the ComicCon! I mostly spent the days in my cosplay, hidden behind my lizard mask. Sadly the mask took some damage during the whole ordeal, but nothing major. For example I hugged a fellow furry and it was such an aggressive hug, one of the jaw spikes of my mask flew off, lol. Photos! Trip itself So yeah, fun trip, I had a good time. Bunch of people took photos of me, which is always fun! There was a lot of people who found my getup really interesting, which is always entertaining. I think the best reactions are always from the kids, pointing and going "MOM LOOK!" or being generally shy. And when I wave back to them when they think I don't notice, they get all excited. It's a great feeling to just entertain people in general. I feel so relaxed and comfortable wearing this cos
